3 Drills To Practice Before Sparring
3 drills to practice before sparring - Peekaboo Style
If you're planning to do some sparring soon here are 3 drills to practice
The first one is a head movement drill, we call it the slipping drill. With this one, your partner is going to keep you at the edge of his range and throw jabs at you.
Your job is to react to the jabs and slip them. This will help to improve your reaction speed, balance and timing. Start off slow and as you get better, your partner can increase the speed and start throwing double jabs, triple jabs and feints.
The second drill is a move that will help you to bet on the inside especially if you're sparring against someone with a longer reach than you, it's called the slip jab.
With this one, your pad man will have on one glove and one pad, as he throws his jab, you're going to counter with your jab at the exact same time but as you throw yours, you're going to slip your head to the outside so that his jab misses and your jab hits!
Practice the movement of this one at first, then practice the set up and the timing - as shown in the video
And the third drill to practice before sparring is the step back counter, this will help in sparring when your opponent is being aggressive. You'll be able to take advantage of that and set up a heavy counter shot
With this drill, your pad man is going to have one pad one glove again. He's going to step in with a jab and you're going to pull back with your back foot while dropping down to duck the punch.
As soon as the punch misses, you're going to spring back with a counter punch - check out the video for examples
